Yagy\u016b Sekish\u016bsai Munetoshi, who studied under the Founder, developed the concept of <em>mut\u014d no kurai<\/em>, and succeeded the Founder as the 2nd headmaster, laying the foundation of Yagy\u016b family swordsmanship. His grandson, Hy\u014dgonosuke Toshitoshi, underwent training by Sekish\u016bsai\u2019s hand, succeeding him as the 3rd headmaster, and founded the Owari Yagy\u016b family when he became the swordsmanship instructor to Lord Tokugawa Yoshinao, first lord of Owari Domain (present day western Aichi Prefecture) in 1615.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yagy\u016b Shinkage Ry\u016b has been passed down by fourteen heads of the Yagy\u016b family and seven lords of the Owari Domain to the 22nd headmaster, Yagy\u016b K\u014dichi Taira Toshinobu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After many difficulties in the Meiji Period and afterward, the Yagy\u016bkai was established in 1955 based on the desire of 20th headmaster, Yagy\u016b Toshinaga, to everlastingly protect and pass down this venerable traditional martial way. Currently, four regional Yagy\u016bkai in Japan, centered in Nagoya, and two regional Yagy\u016bkai overseas are active under the instruction of the headmaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf <strong>Shinkage Ry\u016b Heih\u014d and Yagy\u016b Shinkage Ry\u016b Heih\u014d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Shinkage Ry\u016b Heih\u014d has historically been known by a number of names, as it has gained exposure in the mass media, it has become widely and popularly recognized as Yagy\u016b Shinkage Ry\u016b Heih\u014d, leading also to various misunderstandings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In consideration for these circumstances, we currently use the name Yagy\u016b Shinkage Ry\u016b Heih\u014d in order to avoid such misunderstandings, and to make clear that the orthodox line of Shinkage Ry\u016b Heih\u014d has been passed down without interruption in the Yagy\u016b family.
